Meet Susan Finley
There came a time in Susan's life when she realized life had become too sedentary. She decided to try martial arts. She earned her orange and purple belts and began sparring while attending classes 4-5 times per week. Then her life dramatically changed – she and her husband were in a serious car accident. Susan sustained a concussion and neck injuries. Three doctors told her she could no longer take karate and the only exercise she could do was walk.
Over time, she began to gain weight, suffer from muscle loss and knew that health issues would follow. A friend referred her to The Fitness Edge, and. she began training 3 times per week and doing cardio 4 times per week. She also found an expert physical therapist that helped heal her injuries.
To her surprise, Sid Gee began teaching private karate lessons at The Fitness Edge. Sid had instructed at the studio where Susan had once taken karate years ago. After intense training, she competed in several tournaments and placed well in all of them. Susan says, "I have never been happier in my life". Now, in addition to her karate lessons with Sid, she trains with Jared Fryman, takes boxing lessons with Wayne Hawkins, and attends group karate two nights per week.
At the age of 61, Susan has achieved a balance of fitness through a variety of programs. Her passion and commitment are admirable!
Jared Fryman, her personal trainer, says "Susan is the type of person who gives her all at each and every session. She continues to grow stronger with her weight training and is improving on balance and functional fitness that will help wither her karate. She is a great example of someone who is dedicated to living a healthy lifestyle."

The functional strength training that I began with Brant in Sept. of 2008 literally rebuilt my body and provided me a solid platform and the confidence to undertake a very aggressive running program in preparation for these races. My first goal was to qualify for 2011 Boston Marathon, which I did by running the St. Jude's Memphis Marathon in Dec., 2009 with a time of 3:28. This year, my goal was to "PR" in a half marathon. My times when I started training in 2008 were in the low 1:40's. The 2010 Lewis and Clark Half Marathon on Oct 3rd happened to coincide with my 50th birthday. I celebrated by having 16 friends-- some of the fastest runners in the area-- join me and we all shuttled out to the race together. After months of training in brutal summer weather, we enjoyed a morning with perfect conditions for racing . Four of my friends metaled in their respective age divisions, four of them set PR's and most finished in the top 3% of their divisions. I ran a PR of 1:33:17, besting my old record of 1:34:54 set when I was 42. I am looking forward to running Boston next April.
Fitness Edge Personal Trainer and Swim Competitor Jenny Obert takes on another event!
Jenny competed in the Long Island Triathlon on Sept. 12, 2010 held in Sag Harbor, New York. There were over 1,000 participants which were separated into 50 teams. Jenny's team took 4th place! Jenny was the second one out of the water in the relay, and ranked in the top 5 overall! Personal Trainer Jenny Obert started swimming competitively at age 4. She competed and trained on a National level during high school, and started swimming masters at age 19.
Trainer, Tim Nardoni, and his wife Stephanie competed in the 2010 Missouri State Championships on Saturday, July 24.
Tim was the Novice Overall Winner and placed second in the Open Light Heavyweight class. Stephanie placed first in the Bikini Short Class. Both Tim and Stephanie now qualify for the National Level. After Stephanie had a baby just 11 months ago, they thought what better way to get in shape than to get ready for this show. Tim coached his wife for the entire program and kept her on track with nutrition, cardiovascular and resistance training.

Tony began training with Jim Adams in the summer of 2008 when he was playing with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League. Jim was impressed with Tony's drive to improve his mobility, strength, power and speed. Tony came back the following year for another summer of focused, hard work and went on to have a career year with the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League. Jim was happy to see him come back this summer to resume his training. And, we were all proud and happy for Tony when he witnessed one of his dreams come true - he was drafted by the New York Islanders in the 2010 NHL draft. To prepare for the upcoming season with the New York Islanders, Tony attended their Prospects Camp on Long Island during the week of July 5th. He's looking forward to returning from camp to focus on his training to prepare for training camp in September. Tony knows it will take a lot of work to make his ultimate dream come true of playing in the NHL, but he is more than willing to put forth the effort to make it happen.

In 2003, Sharon started running long distance after her second child was born. She decided to participate in the Lewis & Clark Marathon and ended with a 4:16 time. "I loved the training process and the thrill of the race. My second race was in Big Sur, California in the spring of 2004, and I unknowingly missed qualifying for the Boston Marathon by 1 minute." Sharon then set her sights on the Chicago Marathon later that same year, and qualified with a 3:35 time. Every year since 2005, Sharon has qualified for the Boston Marathon and has completed it three times! The latest was April 2010. Her best marathon time ever was set both in 2006 and 2009 with a time of 3:26.
"I have two children, that keep me very busy, and my wonderful husband gives me the time I need to get in the long workouts on the weekend. After 17 marathons and years of running, Sharon knew she couldn't keep up the pace of two to three marathons a year, so she took up biking and swimming, deciding to try a triathlon. For the last couple years she competed in several local sprint length triathlons. In June 2010, I competed in my first half Ironman Triathlon in Lawrence Kansas, and finished in 5 hours 55 minutes - an hour faster than I predicted! My dream is to complete a full Ironman, 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and full marathon before I'm 50."
"I truly believe that if you train the right way you can do anything. The key is to be smart and listen to your body. I want to continue to race for a very long time and I intend to by staying fit and hopefully being a good role model to my children."
Sharon trains with Derek Fairchild twice each week. "We are proud to have Sharon Leve as a client and friend of The Fitness Edge. Her work ethic in the club along with her accomplishments outside of it, are truly inspirational. I look forward to the challenge of modifying her workouts each week in order to enhance her athletic performance."
